tassel necklace collaboration tutorial

Accessories, necklace, tutorial  |  April 14th 2011  |  0 Comment

WARNING: do not try making the feather one if you have pets (especially cats).  feathers will literally fly everywhere during this DIY.  our hermit crab “Hermit” (yes, kids named him) did not seem bothered by it though and survived.
surprisingly, i only had to purchase decorative rope (Joanns).  i’ve been wanting to use rope for making a necklace and here was my chance…

you will need:
– patience (lots of it)
– dyed feathers (i had a whole bag leftover from last years kids’ craft project, Joanns or Walmart)
– about a yard of decorative rope (overstated… but depends on the length you are trying to achieve)
– sharp scissors
– hot glue gun
– jewelry making wire for tying feather ends together
– blunt scissors for cutting wire
– embroidery floss in desired colors (i’d like to learn embroidery, thus i have a bag of embroidery floss)
– i “ruined” or upcycled  two old bracelets that i definitely was not going to use anymore and used some pieces from each one (basically, use your own imagination here, what color beads you want?  do you want to put anything on top of the feather tassel? etc.)
– the braided suede bracelet i used to connect with rope is optional (you can use chain and rope, or just rope)
– vacuum (feathers are really messy! and will be all over the area)

sorry, i don’t know proper jewelry making terminology (i really need to take a class!) but i’ll try my best to describe…

first, i gathered several blue feathers together in a bunch and wrapped the ends with wire.   then, i shortened the tassel by cutting free ends off with scissors (repeat this process and prepare two more tassels).

now it’s time to top the tassels with some decorative pieces.  i used this old bracelet’s  “spare parts”:

and this snowman charm bracelet definitely had to go.  i used small silver beads from it.

as you can see from the picture above i made white tassel too but decided to keep it down to just blue and black.
i used hot glue gun to decorate the tops of tassels and then figured a way to attach them to the rope.

use old beads and other “spare parts” to decorate your creation.
next, i attached the tassels to the rope.
i tied rope and the braided bracelet together.

i felt as if this was lacking something and decided to wrap blue embroidery floss around the tops of tassels securing the floss with hot glue gun.

… and here it is!  it was 2 a.m. and i was in my pajamas.  though i love my readers, i did not try to dress up to photograph myself, no!
if anybody will try this at home – i would love to receive your photos.
