weaving basket with newspaper
Oooh, all the nifty and thrifty things you can create from old newspaper!
This time I decided to weave them into a little basket. It turned out to actually be pretty sturdy, despite the flimsy newspaper pages.

Materials you’ll need:

  • an old newspaper (finally a purpose for that free junk mail)
  • string or thread
  • clothespins, paper clips, bobby pins or whatever else you find that can keep the paper together
  • scissors (even better if you have a rotary cutter and cutting mat!)
  • staples?

pic 1: Find old newspaper.
pic 2: Cut newspaper into 20 strips. I cut them into 2-newspaper-column-wide strips, which turned out to be about 1 3/4 in (≈ 7,5 cm). It really depends on how small you want the weave pattern to be.
I kept the length of the newspaper as is. You can trim it down later on.
pic 3: 20 strips of newspaper.
pic 4: Fold each strips in half lengthwise. Fold them again, into quarters and again, into eights. Make sure to crease tightly, so you have some sturdy and crisp strips.
pic 5: 20 ready folded strips of newspaper waiting to be weaved.

pic 1: Start weaving the strips, 10 strips in each direction.
pic 2: Square base of 10 x 10 strips.
pic 3: Twine string or thread (I only had packing string on hand which was a little too stiff) around the edges to help you mark the base and also to help the base stay in it’s shape a little better. You interweave the string just like you did with the newspaper, one over and one under.
pic 4: Square base with weaved string.
pic 5: Now off to the little difficult part. You take one of the four sides of the pattern of 10 strips and divide them in half. Beginning with the center, cross them and weave out to the edge. Don’t worry if the weave pattern is not very tight yet. You can tighten it later on by gently pulling on the strips.
Do the same with the other three sides. Join the 4 sides by weaving them together.

pic 1: Secure the weaved strips with the pins.
pic 2: Start folding the strips inward, interweaving once.
pic 3: It will look a little messy, but you’ll cut the access strips off later on.
pic 4: Staple the top part of the interweaved strips.
pic 5: Cut off the access strips.
pic 6: This is what it will look like with staples.

I ended up not liking the staples in my basket and took them out again. The other way to finish of the edge is weaving the loose ends into the sides of the basket.
