Arts and craft book: Embroidery Assisi. A Brief History. Scheme for embroidery.

Despite the fact that the amazing technique of embroidery “Assisi” (or Assisi) originated about 800 years, it still retained its traditions. Assisi embroidery technique or, as it is called “Assisi embroidery” or quite simply – Assisi (assisi) owes its name to the little town of Assisi in Italy, the birthplace of St. Francis. He was considered the protector of the animal world, so the traditional motifs embroidered in the technique of “Assisi,” contain pictures of animals and birds. Another name for embroidery Assisi – voided work (English), literally “work with spaces.” Idiosyncrasy is to display a pattern “in the negative,” ie, no stitches are filled with elements of the pattern and the background. The pattern remains nevyshitym (hence the “gaps”).

Cross stitch kits

Legend has it that once one of the nuns copied the frescoes of Giotto simple primitive lines, typical of the 13th century. Then these images with the stitches have been transferred to the county, the background was filled with counting embroidery. Under another hypothesis, St. Francis brought a sample of Arab Embroidery of the Crusades, from which the Italian masters have developed their own unique style. Thus was born Assisi embroidery technique, but the name “Assisi” came much later – in the XIX century, when renewed interest in this type of embroidery.
To the great joy of Italian women – masters in 1902 in the town of Assisi has been created local “cooperative”, which aimed to provide assistance and work of the poorest women in this town. Until now, the small town of Assisi, located in central Italy, near Perugia, embroidery can be seen sitting in their homes and working on traditional designs in the style “of Assisi.”
Originally on such embroidery motifs painted directly on the fabric (originally used only white linen), then its contour seam cast his “Holbein” monochrome silk thread (the most popular was the color red), and performed around the decorative ornament (a lot of attention was paid to the blue and green, at least you can see the use of brown and yellow colors).
Seam “Holbein” is also known as double-stitch ‘forward needle’ because it is performed in two stages. It creates the same effect as a stitch “back needle,” but is a more accurate on the wrong side of embroidery. That’s why it was used to decorate parts of clothing, which can be seen the reverse side. The background was filled with counting stitches: asymmetrical cross, in which one stitch longer than the second (long-armed cross stitch), openwork obmetochnyh of stitches.
How to perform seam “Holbein”.
The first step is simply to fulfill a number of stitches with the capture of one or two strands of fabric, if you are working on the canvas evenweave. After finishing the first line of the circuit to perform a motive, move in the opposite direction and fill the spaces between stitches.
How to do the cross stitch length.
Embroidering a cross, pull the needle up at point 1, then down to point 2 and then up to the point 3. In the next stage pull the needle and thread to point 4, to produce a long diagonal stitch, then the needle goes up to a point 5, further down in point 6 and up again at point 1. You can then make another long stitch, extending the needle into the point 7.

Continue embroidering the canvas area in the same manner as shown in the figure, so as a result she was filled with tight stitches.
How to fill background stitches.
Traditionally, background embroidered crosses mainly with long stitches, but they – and the Italian crosses woven Algerian stitch. Elongated crosses were used because they allow more densely fill the canvas than usual. The first illustration on the left of the regular tick, the second – elongated. The figure clearly shows that the elongated crosses better cover fabric.
Technique “Assisi” is ideal for those who want to embroider without the scheme. Perform the circuit requires a little pre-workout, and then you just embroider the background, without resorting to the scheme. This is a simple and effective technique.
