Flower and food gifts: Make a Floral Arrangement Jar

Candy, Flower arrangement, Flowers, Holiday crafts, tutorial  |  September 9th 2011  |  0 Comment

Make a Floral Arrangement Jar

For the pink rose jar, you’ll need:

-A canning jar (mine is a pint size, but adjust to your liking)
-a screw on lid or a regular lid with a band
-a piece of Styrofoam the size of the lid
– 5 medium size roses (mine are about 2 inches wide)
– A filler flower like baby’s breath
-Excelsior
-A few small pieces of ivy
– 1 1/2 inch wide ribbon
– fray check or wood burner to keep ribbon ends from fraying
-scissors
-knife to cut Styrofoam
-hot glue gun and glue
-candy, small toys, bath beads/salts/small soaps to fill jar
-Small gift card and ribbon or metallic elastic thread
-Embellishment for center of bow (optional)

To make:

1. Wash your canning jar with soap and water and allow to dry well.

2. If your lid is not a screw on lid, glue the lid and band together with hot glue to make it one. Remember, you aren’t canning, so you won’t need the perfect seal. You will need a 1 piece lid for this project to work.

I could only find my mini glue gun, but a regular size one is better for this project.

Messy!

Geez! Do you think I put ENOUGH glue on this thing?

3. Take your piece of Styrofoam and cut it in a round shape the size of the lid you are using, then glue it on top of the lid.

4. Put hot glue on Styrofoam in small sections and cover glue with Excelsior. Be careful not to burn your hands. If you feel more comfortable, use old scissors or a dowel to hold Excelsior in place while the glue cools. Continue gluing Excelsior on the top and sides of the Styrofoam until it is completely covered. Leave the band of the lid alone. Trim Excelsior as needed just to make it neat.

5. Using old scissors or wire cutters, cut your roses to the size you think looks in proportion to your jar. Insert one rose in the center of the Styrofoam, then place the other four evenly around it.

6. Cut baby’s breath down to size, then fill in the spaces between the roses.

7. Add trailing ivy to the edges of the Styrofoam.

8. Take a piece of ribbon, and wrap it around the jar lid. A 1 1/2 inch ribbon may also cover the sides of your Styrofoam depending on the thickness of the Styrofoam you used. This is okay if this happens. (Mine did cover the Styrofoam and the lid.) Glue in place with a bead of glue all around the lid.

9. Tie a pretty bow and seal the ends. You can use fray check (for those of you who don’t sew look in the sewing notions at the craft store) or if you have a wood burning tool, you can seal the ends with that. For added embellishment, glue a small ribbon rose or a decorative button on the center of the bow. (This is optional)

10. Fill jar with candy or other goodies.

11. Attach a small gift card with metallic elastic thread or 1/8 inch ribbon. My card is a blank business card folded in half with a cherub with dove Valentine’s Day image from The Graphics Fairy

Just to show how versatile this jar can be, here is the second Valentine’s Day jar I made. The larger red and pink jar below is made the same way as the instructions above only with different flowers and a wide mouth quart size canning jar and a bow made from both red and pink 5/8 inch ribbons with a button heart center. It has a card with  this Valentine with cherubs image also from The Graphics Fairy.

When giving your gift, be sure to tell the person receiving it that after the goodies in the jar are gone, if they no longer want to use this as a jar, they can take the lid off to use as a small floral arrangement that would be perfect to set on a bookcase, sitting on a bathroom vanity, or maybe even put it on top of a flower pot.
