Waffle cone sewing tutorial

waffle cone tutorial

I had such an amazing response to my niece’s felt food set and a few requests for instructions that I decided to make a tutorial for the waffle cone. I was going to post it on my blog, but I haven’t really found time to start that up yet so I am posting it here.

First, start with a 5″ x 7″ piece of tan felt. Fold over about 5/8″ and stitch very close to the folded edge. When you unfold and lay the felt flat, you should see a small ridge sticking up. Fold over 5/8″ from your first fold and stitch in the same manner. Continue until you have made folds across the entire piece.

photo

Now fold the top left corner, wrong sides together, making a small triangle about 1″ from the corner. Stitch in the same manner as straight folds. Continue making folds parallel to your first diagonal fold all the way to the bottom right hand corner.

Now, starting at the top right hand corner repeat this process making folds that intersect the previous diagonal folds. When you are done you should end up with something like the bottom right picture. Precision in the placement isn’t super important, it is the texture that matters.

photo

Measure the short side of your piece (mine measured 4″ after all the folding). Measuring from the corner, mark that same distance in an arc to the bottom. (See top left photo)

Cut along markings.

Fold right sides together matching the two straight sides and stitch along that line, backstitching at point.

Turn right side out.

photo

Take two 4″ x 7″ pieces of felt and place on top of each other. (Use two white for vanilla, two brown for chocolate and one of each for a twist cone.) Draw a shape like a small gnome’s hat. (see top left photo)

With two pieces layered together, stitch along your drawing line.

Turn right side out. (A knitting needle comes in handy to help turn the point.)

Stuff with polyester filling. With a good knot at one end of your thread, hand stitch a running stitch along bottom with large stitches.

photo

Pull your thread tight to pull the bottom of your ice cream together. Take a few stitches to secure and tie off your thread.

Decide where you want the crease in the ice cream to form the scoops. Take a small stitch across the seam to anchor your thread. wrap the thread around the ice cream twice and pull until it is the desired shape. Take another small stitch to anchor the end and then wrap once more the other direction. Tie off and clip the thread.

Repeat this step once or twice more until the ice cream looks the way you want it.

Stuff your cone with polyester filling. Insert the bottom of the ice cream into the top of the cone. Pin together. Using small stitches, hand sew the ice cream to the cone. If making for a child, make sure this is done very securely. If they come apart the polyfill could be a choking hazard.
